Designing the 2.0 Version of Carbon Accounting Software

01 — Project Details

Persefoni AI 2022

Persefoni’s Climate Disclosure and Carbon Management Platform enables organizations to track their carbon footprint and plan their decarbonization journeys.

Our team was tasked with solutioning for the challenges associated with collecting activity data and guiding companies toward effective reduction plans. This included redesigning two core features: Collecting Activity Data and Carbon Reduction Planning.

02 — Team Dynamics

Role: UX Writer, Researcher, Strategist

Tools: Figma, Confluence, Miro

Members: UX Designers, Product Managers, Developers, QA, Executive Leadership

03 — The Starting Point

We spent ample time conducting research to solution for the issue that organizations struggled to upload the necessary carbon data due to complex reporting frameworks and lack of clear guidance. Additionally, users needed a simple way to plan their carbon reduction efforts, but the product lacked tools to visualize high-impact changes.

04 — Design Process

Ideation

To tackle these issues, I collaborated with designers and stakeholders to audit existing content, review feature requests, and map user journeys. Drawing inspiration from task management systems, we explored patterns that could streamline data collection and align with user behaviors.

Research

We conducted interviews with existing customers and benchmarked against tools used in similar industries, such as project management software. I worked with the product team to synthesize insights and identify key content gaps that could guide user actions and encourage completion.

Design

I crafted new content flows that focused on simplifying jargon-heavy carbon disclosures and creating step-by-step guidance for data entry. For the carbon reduction feature, we incorporated an interactive slider that visually represented the impact of various reduction strategies, making it easier for users to prioritize changes.

Validation

We conducted usability testing sessions to ensure the new content and interactions resonated with users. Feedback indicated that users found the new flow intuitive and the reduction planning feature helpful for making decisions. Iterative adjustments were made based on the test results before the final release.

04 — The Results

“I LOVE 2.0. . … [it’s] much easier than the last version."
